Determinants of potato producer prices in the peasant-driven market: the Ukrainian case

Purpose. Potato is one of the most important crops to ensure food security globally; potato growing also a source income and livelihood for poorest, especially in developing countries. In view this, studies on factors affecting prices could stimulate agripolitical measures security, rural wealth, industry small farms’ development. This paper aims explore whether business entities farm households operating same (but peasant-driven) market are different. Based available statistical data research background, we focus relationships between wages, production (yields harvested areas), producers’ Ukraine.
 Methodology / approach. Using cross-sectional producer prices, area, yields enterprises households, average monthly wages Ukrainian regions 2018–2020, used system simultaneous equations model behavior (for households) through two-stage least squares method.
 Results. The featured high rates self-provision (through subsistence farming) dominance at market, allowing exploring trends peasant-driven results obtained modelling an interrelation indicate different price determinants households: adjusts fluctuations both (calculated elasticities -0.27 -0.55, respectively, indicating more significant influence latter); households’ responds changes enterprises’ wage (with 0.49 1.35, respectively). 
 Originality scientific novelty. Research empirically evidence that large portion constrain enhances better understanding farming’s impact markets development extends theoretical framework economics functioning.
 Practical value implications. Understanding role slow (obstacle) reveals need policy promoting storage processing capacities mitigate adverse effects performance, decrease vulnerability, facilitate growth.
